Teaching a 12 yo about starting a Barbeque Fire

This is passing my skillz on how to start a BBQ charcoal fire to a 13 year old grand-son.

Warning: This is my opinion/experience on starting a charcoal fire to cook meat and vegetables...it's not official, but it is beneficial. Try at your own risk.

First the basics:

the Cooker.....my cooker is a simple 3 legged Bowl and Lid...inside it has a charcoal crate located at the bottom and a Cooking crate at the top. The LID covers the top.
There is a handle on the lid that enables you to lift the lid and a VENT that allows air to flow through. Another VENT is located at the bottom of the BOWL.

Starting a fire with lighter fluid:
Again, my way....

_first, lay down your charcoal briquets on the charcoal grate.
_second, spray your charcoal lighter fluid on the briquets, a light soaking will do.
_third, and most important, after spraying your briquets with lighter fluid....let it settle/sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
this part is most important because if you light it immediately after applying the lighter fluid.....you end up with a Explosive Bon-Fire that can hurt you and/or your property.

fourth_after you let it settle/sit for 10 minutes take a match and light one corner....shouldn't take long, then light the opposite corner. a small flame should kick up and let it spread to other charcoal....

fifth_once the flame dies down a little and the charcoal starts turning white.....NOW IT'S TIME TO LAY DOWN COOKING GRATE and start cooking your food.

Important note: the VENTS that were mentioned earlier do play a role...open the bottom vent partially and open the top (lid) vent partially. This allows the coals to burn AND the flow of air.
The wider you open the vents, the more air will flow, the hotter the burn...
WARNING: DO NOT TRY TO COOK YOUR FOOD WITH THE LID ON AND THE VENTS SHUT OFF!
Some nasty things will happen to your food....no sh*t!

Happy Barbeque:wave:

Starting a charcoal briquet fire w/o lighter fluid

This time around, I'll use newspaper and matches.

the set up is the same as above.....BUT, there is no lighter fluid.

No worries son....we have newspaper! Simply wad up a couple of pages and place it underneath the charcoal grill (bottom grill) and on top of the charcoal grill have another wad of newspaper and cover it with charcoal briquets.
Make sure both vents are open to allow air to come through.
Take your matches and light up the bottom wad of paper....and be patient!
The coals will catch! When your coals start turning white, apply your food to the cooking crate.

Happy Barbeque-ing:tu:

We should compare notes. My 12 y.o. Daughter's learning that food ain't just from a microwave. :) So we're learning how to make waffles. It's a start. nothing worse than a woman who can't cook.

Summer's here, so U know, she's gonna learn how to grill.
