Black Friday stems from Slavery

It was the day after Thanksgiving when slave traders would sell slaves for a discount to assist plantation owners with more helpers for the upcoming winter (for cutting and stacking fire wood, winter proofing etc.), hence the name.

After slavery was abolished the practice was still prevalent in the Mississippi region during the 1870's. Former slave owners created this loop-hole as a way to continue slavery in a way. They would present themselves as shop owners and auction off black 'workers' because of the need to have more help during the winter.

No financial compensation was provided. Slaves would be compensated with food and shelter and this allowed slavery to extend further.

Many fail to realize that their infatuation with this shopping "holiday" is only another way to keep former traditions alive.
