(graphic video) Rescued dog bites (stupid!) NBC anchor in face during feel-good segment gone wrong

It was supposed to be one of those feel-good segments on a local television newscast: A rescued dog. A grateful owner. The hero firefighter who pulled the dog from the ice. But that's not how it turned out.

The dog, an Argentine mastiff named Gladiator Maximus, attacked Kyle Dyer, anchorwoman at NBC's KUSA Denver affiliate, during a live, in-studio segment on Wednesday that was meant to celebrate the dog's rescue from an icy lake the day before.

Dyer was shown petting the mastiff during the segment, then kneeling on the floor to get closer, when the 85-pound pooch bit her in the face. Paramedics and animal control were called to the studio. Dyer was rushed to a Denver hospital where she had reconstructive surgery overnight. The 3-year-old dog was taken to a Denver animal shelter where it is being "quarantined."

Video of the attack, as you might imagine, has gone viral, but KUSA has been issuing take-down notices, trying to get the clip off the Internet. (The "Today" show won't even show it.)

Patti Dennis, KUSA vice president of news, said Dyer's surgery was successful, and that Dyer is expected back to work in a few weeks. "The surgeon was pleased with the outcome," Dennis said. "Kyle says she wants everyone to know she is OK and is concerned about the viewers who were watching the incident live on TV."

"Several people interacted with the dog [prior to the segment] and everything seemed fine," Dennis said. "Then at the last moment, the dog had behavior that nobody predicted or understood. Clearly we learned something."

Dyer is known for a weekly segment--"Kyle's Kritters"--that showcases animals from the Denver Zoo.

Michael Robinson, Max's owner, has been cited by Denver Animal Control for a "leash-law"" violation ("because the owner did not have control of the dog at all times"), for allowing a dog to bite and for not having the dog properly vaccinated.

But animal experts say it was Dyer who was really at fault.

"The dog was trying to tell her, 'I am going to bite you,'" Colleen Safford, a prominent New York-based dog trainer, told Yahoo News. "Dogs 'talk' to us with their body with each and every interaction. This dog was repeatedly 'telling' the anchor that she was making him uncomfortable and if she didn't stop, he would bite."

"Basically, she did everything wrong," Ron Berman, a canine behavior specialist, told NBC. "She went up to a dog she didn't know--who didn't know her--and she either tried to kiss him or hug him or put her face too close to his face. He felt threatened and bit her."

Max is expected to be released to Robinson after a 10-day evaluation. Robinson is due in court April 4.

"The dog bite accident that happened today was unfortunate and certainly not expected based on what we knew about the dog and his owner," Dennis said in a separate statement. "Our goal was to unite the owner with the rescuer for a nice segment. We are all thinking of Kyle and her recovery. We love Kyle and what she and her family do for this community. We also love animals and will continue to do all we can to use 9NEWS to improve animal welfare in Colorado."

Dennis said the station is now reviewing its guidelines concerning animals in the studio.

Tigers Escape Cages in San Francisco Zoo
SAN FRANCISCO - Four tigers escaped their cages at the San Francisco Zoo on Tuesday, killing one person and injuring two others, a newspaper reported.

One tiger was shot and the other three were brought under control, San Francisco Fire Chief Audrey Lee told the San Francisco Chronicle. It was not immediately clear how the tigers escaped.

The zoo has been evacuated. It was open in spite of the holiday, and was scheduled to close at 5:00 p.m PST.
It was unclear whether the victim was a visitor or a zoo worker.

Police officers and firefighters are investigating.

I got puzzled reading your response, so checked out the clip in the OP. LOL! I can see why you started talking about other stupid things "some" folk do (feel entitled to do!). Naw, my brutha, this is stupid personified! In the video I posted, you don't actually HEAR the dog growl as the reporter pulls on his muzzle and sticks her face into his! I mean, only a LUNATIC wouldn't have jumped back! Well, she's a lunatic. I looked for the ORIGINAL video (the one where the dog was growling) that went with the OP, but they pulled it (NBC has been yanking copies wherever they can find them) and replaced it with another video about the dog, now in an Animal Control shelter. The guy who runs the shelter felt the same way I did - she put her face in a strange dog's face.... who felt threatened by her invasion of his space and bit her. Also, one of the neighbors of the brutha who owns the dog said that he walks the dog around their neighborhood all the time and that he has never seen the dog get aggressive, much less violent.

Anyhoo, I'm posting another video. The brutha in this one says EXACTLY how I feel about what went down (plus you can hear the dog growl get the freak away from me! just before he bit her):

This is what one person who also saw the original vid before it was janked, said:

Revlis
For those who have not seen the actual video, the dog even gives the reporter about a 3 second warning. As she leans in closer to his face he noticeably bares his teeth. That, in dog lingo, is "back the "F" off". Yet she ignores the cues and continues in closer.

The dog earlier in the day, is in a icy pond for about 20 minutes, then you have him on tv and lean over him and come down towards his face. WHAT do you think most dogs would do? I'd bite you too if you did that to me. I hope nothing bad happens to the dog. He tried to worn her.

And not only was he in that ice-filled water (he was rescued, remember?), but now he's in a studio with lights and unfamiliar noise and unfamiliar strangers and here's the woman invading his personal space!

This was not an attack, it was a warning...the dog nipped her, like it would a puppy it was trying to correct.

Yep!! The dog def gave her a warning when he showed his teeth to her but she was too busy watching the men she was interviewing to see it! And like the comments said...the dog had just been through a very traumatic experience and she was a stranger!!

Oh, quit calling Cu... er, the dog a monster, dog-hater! :nana: The guy at the animal control and the brutha's neighbor BOTH said the dog was non-aggressive. EVERYBODY said the crazy white woman had no business sticking her face into a strange dog's face..... especially after he had bared his teeth and growled at her. :nono:

I don't think the dog was 'hungry.' After all, he'd just been pulled out of a river full of ice.... that he fell through when it broke under his weight. Prolly that traumatic event pu..... Naw. The crazy stranger pulling on his muzzle, invading his personal space and trying to kiss him in the mouth with her unfamiliar smell is what made him defend himself by chomping down on her face. You know how dogs do it.

I believe you. Mastiffs are big dogs. I know I'd never go up a strange one, no matter HOW docile it seemed and try to kiss it..... in its big slobbery, drooling mouth! :yuck:

DUMMY'S ALL AROUND

The owner (the brutha holding him by the collar wasn't a fireman; he was the dog's owner) should have realized that no matter how obedient the dog might normally be, it had just suffered a near-death trauma, was in unfamiliar surroundings with lights and cameras and strangers and told the equally unfamiliar anchor woman to back off. The anchor woman should never have tried to kiss the dog, and most certainly should have backed off when the dog bared it's teeth.... even before it growled at her.

What can I say? Same as you: DUMMYS ALL AROUND

BUT...this is why I always say..."CATS RULE !!!!"

Whomp! :wizard: There it is!

Who woulda guessed?

But... got to say it. I used to be afraid of cats. Loved dogs always. Still, once my daughter got a cat, and then my son, well.... love those mischievous, rotten little fur balls of love to death! :tu:
