I've been thinking about moving out of the country, but I'm afraid to venture too far. So, I've been considering Canada.

Tell me, for an American Black lady, what non-French speaking city would you suggest I look into?

You would love Canada.

The only french speaking province (state) is Quebec, so your options are completely open. Of course, I hold Toronto close to my heart...cause the T-Dot has it going on! Vancouver is also nice.

I was reading up on Toronto and Vancouver. I'm intersted in a place with a lot of cultural opportunities and I think Toronto won for it's diversity, etc. But, Toronto is farther from Cali (and my family), so I'm kinda torn about it.

What is it that you do when you're looking for high octane excitement?

(sorry, edited my response after I realized I didn't read your question to it's entirety. Oddly enough you mentioned the two cities I would encourage.

Toronto is farther from Cali, all the way on the East coast. Vancouver is beautiful...you have lush green and amazing winter sports. Also, I understand they don't get as much snow as Toronto. And though it's expensive to live in Vancouver, you get paid probably the highest than any other province...but diversity wise it's nothing like Toronto.

Toronto is definitely the most diverse out of all of Canada...it's also the hub of fashion, media, etc. with a downtown core full of activity.

But what i love most is the opportunity....the opportunity to have a quality life be it career, owning a home, or raising your family. You can hold onto your culture and experience others (as Canada is primarily made up of immigrants)...not to forget that crime is very low.

I lived in the US for most of my life, but I've never regretted returning to Canada.

(sorry, multi-tasking...hope I didn't butcher that response (if one more person calls my name swear) lol)

What do I do for excitment?

Well, I'm a nerd...homebody. lol

But in the summer...Rastafest...Afrofest...Jerkfest...Taste of Danforth (were you taste foods from around the world)...Jamaica Day...Afrikan Festival...Caribana...

There is so much that goes in the summer I can't even keep up. Whether your Caribbean, Italian, Greek, Sout Asian whatever, there is some sort of even happening. Oh, and lets not forget the Film Festival and Fashion Week.

Winter, I hibernate. lol...poetry classes...hit a club on occassions... go to a concert (normally reggae), and my book club picks back up.

Aside from all that, I have wine parties with friends...bbq...etc.

Recently started to do some out doors stuff...always been a fisher but I started Kyaking and want to start white water rafting. I go camping...stuff like that.

Honestly, haven't been actively searching.....and not looking forward to it either.

I strongly feel it will just fall in your lap...let's just hope I'm right. ..there seems to be a lot of good options, it's just ending up at the right time and place. Though...I do have a few trying to encourage me to taste rainbow, but I'm still particular about my flavour.

Each province has there own coverage, the medical coverage in Ontario is called OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan), it will cover pretty much anything except services that are not medically necessary, such as cosmetic surgery….although, things such as breast reductions are normally covered. If you are from Ontario, you can use your card anywhere…although Quebec is a bit different, you may have to pay out of pocket first and bill it to OHIP.

I do have a primary doctor, in fact, he delivered me…but you also have an option to go to any medical clinic (walk-in). With you doctor, you make an appointment, normally the same day or next day. Walk-ins are, of course, first come first serve. And at all times your seeing your doctor, in some cases the nurses might prep you (more so in a walk-in scenario). Procedures depends…it takes time to see a specialist, for example.

Tax money from Ontario and the federal government pays for OHIP services.

With births, they cover prenatal and postnatal care, labour delivery (c-section if necessary), anesthetics, and postnatal care in hospital or home if the patient is in dire need (at least until the first doctor’s visit), etc

Eyes are dependant on t he case at hand. Routine eye examinations provided by either an optometrist or physician, for patients aged 20 to 64 are no longer covered by OHIP. But ophthalmology services for patients of any age with medical conditions or diseases affecting the eyes are covered. For example…I’m half blind in one eye due to the accident, I can develop cataracts or glaucoma at any time in that eye, and so I don’t have to pay for any of my eye doctor visits. Also, if you’re receiving assistance under the Ontario Disability Support Program, Ontario Works or the Family Benefits Program receives coverage for routine eye examinations once every two years.

OHIP will not pay for medications, they are normally covered by private benefits.
