It will mos def benefit the cable companies, but I doubt if it's to monitor us. If anything, the big switch is for the government to have more wireless space to TAX. It's a source of revenue for the federal coffers.

Actually, the cable companies fought this for a long time. Reason being is they had to buy/manufacture new equipment and even adjust their business model to broadcast the newer signal to each person's home...THAT COSTS MAJOR UP FRONT MONEY that cable companies didn't want to fork over. What's that phrase, minimize costs...maximize profit?

But overseas, they've had this technology for years, and we are now playing catch up. So my opinion of what's the REAL reason behind the switch is to keep up with the Jones'es
