American Gangster

If you like Movies about rich black men marrying white-looking latinas, draping them in diamonds and furs and living in mansions, and naked black women being shot in alleys and gunned down by cops in heroin factories, then you'll LUV American Gangster!

Oh! BTW, the picture sucked, as well.

Haven't seen it, but, I wouldn't doubt that your right. The people the movie is based on were rather despicable. I thought his wife was supposed to be creole?

She was Puerto Rican. When he was busted and broke (govt seized $250 million), she left him and went home to Puerto Rico.

To show you how poor the script was, they didn't show her leaving. They WROTE it on the screen in a sort of epilogue.

I was listening to Hot 97 this morning and they basically said the exact same thing.

It will always come down to different strokes for different folks. To one with a healthy sense of her self-worth, thinks she looks good and is dayum desireable, and by extrapolation, everyone who looks like her, e.g., black women, the picture was insulting.

Ex., in The Pursuit of Happyness, Will Smith's wife was latina. Didn't particularly care for it (until she gave him her kid, then was glad she WASN'T black!), but her being latina didn't really bother me. The portrayal of the latina in American Gangster (vis a vis the black women in the picture) however, pissed me off. Of ALL the women in the picture, she was the ONLY one depicted as sweet, decent and almost as "pure". Even Ruby Dee who played Denzel's mother, turned out to be a dirtbag! At what? 80, 90 years-old?! A dirtbag?!

And, as I recall, EVERY black woman with a speaking part in the movie was poor, naked, and either got killed or almost killed in a fusillade of bullets (while the "pure", "desirable" latina was literally swathed in chinchilla). Also, in the heroin manufacture house where all the black women were naked (except for bikini briefs and in some scenes, some wore bra and panties), one of the low-life denizens of Harlem actually brings her 10 year-old son to work with her, and while he plays ball in the hall, naked-mommie seduces another dirtbag in front of him.

That's the whole gamut of black personhood: mother, father(-figure Bumpy the gangster), men, women and children - all low-life dirtbags. Ah! And NOBODY looked like 50 Cents. They looked like they could be real-life neighbors of Denzel. In other words, from looking at this picture, your average middleclass black - of ANY age - looks and acts like a dirtbag.

This is why Tyler Perry who portrays black people like we know us to be, is enjoying such success, IHMO.

Another thing: the script, the director's vision for the film -- mediocre. I did not believe Russell Crowe's character for one second ("goofies" are not leaders of men, especially as in the last scene, an ARMY of policemen) and other than with precious Miss Latina, Denzel's character was pretty much strait-jacketed, limited to him being a murderous brute. I would give American Gangster a "C+" except for the low-life and "UNdesireable" portrayal of black women and the 'stuck in my craw' portrayal of the latina. Her role in the picture turns it into a negative.... for me. JMHO

So the main character hooks up with a latina, what of it?(lol)....There isn't that much difference between 'them' and 'us' anyway.Besides some latinas are really hot and most men will not turn away a hot woman....I plan on going to see it next week.

Total of 5 stars.

-1 Interracial Relationship
-1 Negative Portrayal Of Black Women
-1 Negative Portrayal Of Black Men
-1 Negative Portrayal Of Women in General

Well I haven't watched it so I can't really judge.

But I don't condone the subliminal or in-your-face messages.

Sure, there doesn't have to be a "balance" but there's better things I can do and learn with my time.

Yes, BB, the criminal buys himself a latina. And when he has no more money to pay her, she divorces him and goes back to Puerto Rico.

btw, so sorry your experience with sistahs has been so negative. :grouphug: I assure you, most of us wouldn't dump a brutha like, well, ya know... when times get rough. But then, yours is an unusual case to begin with, isn't it? Seeing as most bruthas actually like their moms and when they grow up, they want "a girl just like the girl that married dear old dad...." ;)

Oh! Sorry to burst your bubble... again, but not only is/was the latina NOTHING like self-loathing black bruth.., er, people (she'd probably spit on you for suggesting she was), she wasn't "hot", either. :D

As well you should. After all, all throughout my review, I took pains to say "IMO", "for me", and ended it with "JMHO".

Sure, there doesn't have to be a "balance" but there's better things I can do and learn with my time.

I never said there wasn't a "balance" in the movie. :nono: Even though they showed - TWICE - black Harlemites shoving and grabbing for free turkeys from first Bumpy, then Frank (Denzel's character), at the end, Crow's character SAID there were black folk lined up around the block to testify against Frank (hearing it ONCE, rather than seeing it 'in your face' on the big screen - twice). So that's balance, of sorts.

And since you're not going to see it, perhaps you'll get some "balance" on this thread when someone else sees and reviews it with commentary more meaty than "it was interesting".... (when reviewing movies, articulation does count  ) BB's salivating at the thought of willing white flesh - even if it's not robust and dimply  - is more a "preview" than a "review".
