Sula ~ Discussion

Aiight folks, March is in a few days and I'm sure there are a lot of discussions we have on this book.

Any quotes, characters sketches, observations can be posted here and we can discuss our likes and dislikes about this book.

Let's have fun with this :)

Aiight . . .

I'm done the book and it ain't even March yet

I have so much to say, but since we just starting this topic, I'll say the first two comments on my head.

1. I felt bad for Chicken Little . . he seemed like such a cute little boy.

2. Ajax made me wonder real hard . . . I'll elaborate later on that

Got my book. I'll check back in as much as I can, since my home computer is getting fixed/upgraded. I'll read it again for the umpteenth time, (love it) and jump in later.

I finished reading, Virtopia. I don't get it. Sula and Nel were crazy. The town of Bottom was crazy. Eva was crazy. Hannah was crazy. Shadrock was crazy. And I don't get the purpose of this book or think its equisite in any way.

I mean - the attraction that the two girls share for each other initially was very deep and yet Morrison didn't take the time to really develop what I would see as a strong enough bond for them. She has them just becoming immediate friends who valued the lifestyle of the other. Then because of the conversation Sula overhears one day, she just goes berserk and Nel is right on board?

I really don't get the purpose of Suicide day or the day when a lot of people get killed in the mine during it.

Please enlighten me because I hate when i don't see significance. Or is there significance? Is that what Morrison's foreward was about when she explains the pressures of black authors to pen something inately "black" and how she didn't want to follow that pattern with this? That she could just write anything utilizing her imagination to tell a story?

signed - LOST. :wow:

That struck me as odd.

ok the purpose of the day when the people got killed in the mine/tunnel and suicide day was sort of an ironic purpose. im a try to explain, its kind of hard to. i know those of you who read the book realized that after sula died, a whole bunch of bad things or new evils were created in town. Ex. the mothers started beating their kids because their anger was usually focused on sula. younger generations stopped caring for the older generations. sula helped them balance the evil in town. they needed her basically.

now with the mining incident its suppose to be (in my opinion) a biblical allusion. shadrock, who was the only person who gave sula hope by saying "always"and let her in his house/ shack is like the prophet who led the people who rejoiced over sula's death to judgment as if on judgment day.

another irony is that the tunnel that collapsed on them was suppose to bring jobs for blacks but of course the jobs were given to the white workers. so its kind of like the tunnel betrayed them.
:ummm: i hope that made sense and explained some stuff
